PRECAUTIONS:

The plant bears oval, glossy brown & beautiful seeds. These seeds look very attractive but are highly poisonous in nature.
Ricin is a carbohydrate-binding protein produced in castor seeds. It is the most poisonous naturally occurring substance. Ricin prevents synthesis of protein & cell metabolism. Since the toxicity involves synthesis of protein so visible symptoms appear only after few hours of ingestion or inhalation. Although on basis of symptom supportive treatments can be given but long-term organ damage can occur.

Swallowing of whole seed is not poisonous. But if a person chews the seed & breaks the seed coat then he/she may suffer from the toxicity & symptoms may appear after as early as 4- 8 hours & as late as 24 hours.

Since castor is easily available plant & its seeds are quite attractive & particularly children should be aware of the toxicity of seeds. Children should be kept away from castor plant.

Symptoms of ricin poisoning include abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, increased heart rate & seizures. It can progress to severe dehydration, low blood pressure & decrease in urine within a few days. The symptoms can persist up to a week, although they typically start to appear from 4 hours of ingestion. Full recovery is possible when the poisoning is treated promptly.

Castor oil's main side effects fall into the categories of skin reactions & gastrointestinal upset, which isn't terribly surprising given the agent's actions on your intestinal wall.
Castor oil is broken down by your small intestine into ricinoleic acid, which acts as an irritant to your intestinal lining.
This effect is what gives castor oil the ability to reverse constipation—but it's also the reason that some people report digestive discomfort, diarrhea & other gastrointestinal side effects.

If you suffer from cramps, irritable bowel, ulcers, diverticulitis, hemorrhoids, colitis, prolapses or have recently undergone surgery, you should probably avoid castor oil due to these possible adverse reactions.

Although castor oil has been traditionally used to help stimulate labor in healthy pregnant women, there are widespread reports of nausea.

Do not use castor in intestinal obstruction & abdominal pain of unknown origin, appendicitis, inflammatory bowel (IBS) disease.
Do not consume for more than 8–10 days.
Do not consume castor oil frequently as it can cause electrolyte losses, gastric irritation & allergic skin reactions. It should not be given to children.
